Peace-building and Conflict
Resolution
Our Reason for Action
The frequency of political and ethno-religious conflicts around the
world is now a critical global issue threatening lives and livelihoods
worth billions of dollars. In Nigeria for instance, ethno-religious
and political conflicts have been experienced in all regions of the
country with an alarming frequency following the inception of a democratically
elected government in 1999. Northern Nigeria is known to be the most
affected by ethno-religious conflicts. Thousands of lives and properties
worth millions of naira were lost in the 2001 and 2008 conflicts in
Jos which reverberated in other local government areas of plateau state.
The recurrent conflicts in Bauchi, Kaduna and Kano states are all pointers
to this state of conflict. Countries like Sudan, Chad, Kenya, DRC Congo,
Liberia, Rwanda and many others have all experienced violent conflicts
resulting in the deaths of Millions and the displacement of many more
millions.
As the frequency of conflicts increases around the world, it impacts
negatively on the efforts to reduce poverty and achieve development.
Conflicts threaten the stability of families, businesses, communities
and good governance. In all conflicts, vulnerable elements suffer the
impact most. There is a global recognition that disasters often reverse
progress made in development and undermine new development initiatives.
Therefore a critical area of Global Relief work is to safeguard development
gains and reduce losses/poverty by proactively working to foster reconciliation
in conflict zones.
